Sr. Clinical Engineer
UCSF Medical Center is seeking experienced Senior Developmental Engineer (SDE) to provide a full range of high quality technical support to the Medical Center The SDE frequently works with a high degree of independence and is responsible for the technical quality and accuracy of their work. Assigned responsibilities may include scheduled maintenance, calibration, performance testing, unscheduled repair, electrical safety testing, recall modification, and pre-purchase evaluation of medical equipment. A SDE is expected to respond effectively to the wide variety of equipment in use in the hospital, by communicating with the clinical staff, technical staff, the equipment manufacturers and vendors, and management. The prospective SDE will have two years of experience servicing Imaging Equipment. The SDE may be assigned to support a specified programmatic area and also perform special projects as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: The Senior Developmental Engineer reports directly to the Clinical Engineering Operations Manager. The SDE also interfaces directly with the Cardiac Invasive Labs Patient Care Manager and has a general reporting responsibility to the Operations Director of the UCSF Heart and Vascular Services.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs timely, simple and elaborate scheduled maintenance and calibration procedures ensuring safe and proper use of equipment in accordance with established standards. 2. Maintains accurate records of service and maintenance and manages information utilizing the appropriate manual and electronic systems. 3. Aware of all service contracts’ status and limitations. 4. Performs routine maintenance of Biomedical and Imaging equipment using established procedures; uses complex test equipment to troubleshoot electronic circuits and systems. 5. Respond to STAT/emergency trouble calls while consistently demonstrating the ability to assess priorities and seeks additional resources for direction and consultation when necessary. May be required to service equipment on any shift if delays would adversely affect patient care. 6. Performs accurate and timely medical equipment related incident investigations. The technician should determine what has happened and what can be done to prevent a recurrence, and document the incident and assessment. 7. Provides training to clinicians in the proper and safe use of equipment, documenting “competency” and “plan for competency” as a part of the department quality improvement program. 8. Performs component level repairs with or without detailed technical documentation. Documents all work. 9. Handles soldering/de-soldering tasks, both routine and sophisticated, with controlled temperature and anti-static caution. 10. Actively coordinates installation, design, or modification of physiological monitoring systems in adult patient care environments to meet specific department needs. 11. Evaluates new and existing equipment, makes recommendations to department manager for any changes or modifications. 12. Works with assigned UC IT personnel to troubleshoot systems problems related to software or archiving issues. 13. Works in a team environment with clinical staff by communicating lab equipment issues/problems and plan for resolution.

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Technology, or equivalent 7 years of experience working on Biomedical Equipment within a hospital setting 3 years experience in servicing Imaging Equipment Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Technology, or equivalent field will be considered in lieu of required experience.

EDUCATION: A minimum of an Associates Degree in Biomedical Electronics, Biomedical Equipment Technology or equivalent. CBET certification is a plus.

EXPERIENCE: Has a minimum of three years experience in performing operational verifications, preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of medical equipment.

GENERAL COMPETENCIES: Must be highly skilled in the use of test equipment and hand tools. Have the ability to Read and understand schematics and service manuals. Have great troubleshooting skills. Work very well alone and with others.

ADDITIONAL COMPETENCIES: Must have good interpersonal and communication skills. Very detailed and organized. Have a good understanding of monitor networks and patient monitors in an ICU and Operating Rooms. Have computer skills including excel, word, various search engines, use of email and a Medical Equipment work order and data base system.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Present a very professional image.   Speak, read and write in English.
