Los Angeles Valley College BMET Program

Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) of the Los Angeles Community College District offers one and two year programs in Biomedical Equipment Technology. Both require completion of standard electronics, computer science, biomedical engineering technology courses and an option for a cooperative education or internship session. The degree program includes a choice of general education classes.

Cooperative Education or Internship programs are partnerships between the college and business, industry or government that provides students with the opportunity to gain career-related work experience prior to graduation. This coordinated effort between the college and industry provides students with the invaluable opportunity to blend theory and practice thereby greatly enhancing their professional development.

For BMETs an operational health care facility is the place where one finds a complete suite of modern equipment in a setting of actual use. Even a single hospital will have only a selected suite from all the commonly seen equipment because of the diversity of manufactures and the continual upgrading of technology. The knowledge gained with one model is readily transferable to operation of another manufacturer even technology.

An associate degree requires a minimum of 60 semester units of course credit (One credit hour of community college work is approximately three hours of recitation, study, or laboratory work per week throughout a term of 16 weeks.) Aside from maintaining minimum academic levels: Students must demonstrate competence in reading, in written expression, and in mathematics by class or examination. As an occupational or vocational program BMET students take at least 18 units of General Education courses plus at least 36 units of the major's courses. General Education training is not only science for BMETs must communicate with both the health care and administration team by vocal and written means.
