October, 2007 Meeting at
Scripps Memorial - La Jolla Mr. Anderson has over 30 years experience in clinical engineering and undergraduate training in life sciences and postgraduate work in biomedical technology and clinical engineering at San Diego State University and University of California Medical Center, San Francisco. Prior to establishing Biomedical Consulting Services he was Director of Biomedical Engineering for St. Joseph Hospital of Orange and Children's Hospital of Orange County and other biomedical engineering positions. Of note he was one of the biomedical engineers on the shipboard recovery crew for the Apollo 14 moon flight.

(IT) with regards to HIPAA compliance and biomedical IT security. Jim
presented an overview
and discussed areas of concern for Biomeds such as security and integrety
of data and the Manufacturer Disclosure Statement for Medical Device Security
(MDS2).

January, 2007 Meeting
at UCSD - Hillcrest A unique opportunity to meet the designer of the best of
the current ESUs, Ken Taylor PhD Biomedical Engineer has designed for Valley
Lab (Valley Lab Force FX) and is currently Vice President of R&D at ConMed
Electrosurgery. He presented at the history of the ESU from the original Bovie
(he used to perform PMs at a Hartford, CT hospital),current designs, how
and why it works, safety concerns, common faults, future designs, troubleshooting
and Planned Maintenance procedures
November, 2006 Meeting
at Scripps Mercy Terry's organization repairs over 200 endoscopes per month
for GE Healthcare maintenance service organizations and medical institutions.
He provided an insight into the complexity of scopes (e.g., many channels,
mechanisms, and optics) and tasks which may be accomplished
by Biomeds in their facilities through many pictures of actual units under
repair and some that were beyond. More extensive repairs he suggested
should be left to organizations (manufacturers or independents) dedicated to
repairs with an inventory of proper (and expensive) tools. Most repairs are
due to mishandling, coiling too tightly, and abuse during sterilization. Thus
training all personnel that come in contact with the devices will lead to their
longevity
and reduced
repair costs. Coincidently last month's 24x7 contained an article about endoscope
repair. Click

September, 2006 Meeting
at Sharp Memorial An excellent insight into what to do as a first responder
when a hospital’s sterilizer has issues. Simon and Chuck gave an overview
of steam sterilizer manufacturers, Steris history and common actions to take
when one is failing. Then Chuck and
Conrad demonstrated these procedures on two Sharp Memorial Hospital’s
units. The demostrations elicited questions and so
the session continued for at least a half-hour beyond the schedule. Click
here to view a short course on hospital sterilization procedures an select
document 018. Or click
here for an interesting article about improper procedurees.
June, 2006 Meeting
at UCSD Hillcrest An excellent presentation on the basics of Ultrasonic
Imaging, formats, image types and use of phantoms. This was followed by a
hands on demonstration of.the presentation with a large system and several
phantoms. The excellence of the presentation was shown by virtually everyone
staying
as the
presentation
went over the schedule by 3/4 of an hour and most stayed to witness the demonstration.

annotated version of the entire presentation.
April, 2006 Meeting
at Sharp HealthCare An alternative to traditional Module based physiologic monitoring systems
February, 2006 Meeting
at Sharp HealthCare You missed an excellent meeting on defibrillator technologies.
Both Zoll and Medtronic Pysio-Control agreed that published studies show superiority of
biphase over monophase waveforms and no significant difference between
brands. Guests from Fluke Medical and Aramark provided colorful
insight into the background and choice of standards.
