The Frank Yip Scholarship Fund

The Frank Yip Scholarship Fund was established by the CMIA Board of Directors in 1998. It was created to honor the memory of Franklin Yip after his untimely passing.

CMIA officers and members worked diligently to create and refine the policies governing applicant eligibility and criteria for choosing award recipients. The Fund was endowed by donations from individuals, vendors and Chapter fundraisers. The first award presentation from the Fund was made in January 2002 at the Awards Ceremony and Banquet.

Dedicated to the Memory of Franklin Yip

Frank was the owner of FYE Medical, a Medical Equipment distributor located in Brisbane, CA near San Francisco. FYE supplied a diverse line of products to hospitals and healthcare facilities. From patient care equipment to repair parts and biomedical test equipment, if Frank and his staff didn’t carry it, they would find it for you.

Although Frank lived in the Bay Area, he was active in the biomedical community throughout California.  His involvement with BioMed started in the 1970’s, long before the incorporation of the CMIA in 1992.  He participated in the formation of the Bay Area Chapter and served on the Board of Directors.  While traveling throughout the state, Frank provided his own unique communication network.  His visits to BioMed shops often included food and always included lively conversation.  If you were challenged by a repair or needed a new policy or procedure, Frank knew someone you could call.  He was also a resource for employment opportunities whether you needed a job or had an opening in your shop.

Those who knew Frank will remember a man who was always willing to give his opinion.  He didn’t insist that you agreed with him, but you were never in doubt about how he felt.  You also got the benefit of Frank’s advice.  It often included encouragement to improve your skills and your leadership abilities.  Frank valued education and encouraged people to get training and keep pace with changing technology.
